Competition format:

In the group stage, the teams are divided into 8 groups, each with 4 teams, where the top team and runners-up of each group will qualify for the knockout stage. In the knockout stage, the matches are played over 2 legs to determine who will qualify for the quarter-final stage, with the away goals rule coming in effect.

The quarter-final and semi-final stage becomes a free draw, which is also played over 2 legs, and once again with the away goals rule being in effect. The final of the tournament is contested as a one-off match at a neutral venue.

The current holders are Barcelona, who won the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League final 3-1 against Manchester United at Wembley, London.

The most successful club in the competition are Real Madrid, who have been Champions of Europe 9 times. They have also been runners-up on 3 occasions.
