The winners of the Romanian Liga I will be entered into the UEFA Champions League, with the runners-up entered into the qualifying stages. The teams finishing in 3rd to 6th places are entered into the UEFA Europa League. The teams finishing in the bottom four places will be relegated to Romanian Liga II.

Recent history:
The current champions are Otelul Galati, who won the 2010-11 Romanian Liga I title for the first time in their history, ahead of FC Timisoara in 2nd place.
The most successful club in the competition are Steaua Bucuresti, with 23 titles since the competition became the Romanian Liga I in 1909.
