The winners of the Portuguese Primeira Liga will be entered into the UEFA Champions League, with the runners-up entered into the qualifying stages. The teams finishing in 3rd to 6th places are entered into the UEFA Europa League. The teams finishing in the bottom two places will be relegated to the Liga de Honra.

The current champions are FC Porto, who won the 2010-11 Portuguese Primeira Liga title by a huge 21 points, dropping just 6 points. Benfica finished in 2nd place.
The most successful club in the competition are Benfica, with 32 titles since the competition became the Portuguese Primeira Liga in 1934.
