The teams finishing in the top three places of the Japanese J-League will be automatically entered into the AFC Champions League competition, with the bottom three teams at the end of the season being relegated to J-League Division 2.

The current champions are Nagoya Grampus, who won the 2010 Japanese J-League title, finishing 10 points clear of Gamba Osaka in 2nd place.
Kashima Antlers are the most successful club in the Japanese J-League, with 10 titles since the league was founded in 1992.
