Competition format:

The winners, runners-up and 3rd placed teams in the Italian Serie A automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League, with the 4th placed team entering the qualifying stage of the competition. The teams finishing in 5th and 6th and also the winners of the Coppia Italia are entered into the UEFA Europa League. The teams finishing in the bottom three places are relegated to the Italian Serie B.

Bari, Brescia, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Cesena, Chievo, Fiorentina, Genoa, Internazionale, Juventus, Lazio, Lecce, Milan, Napoli, Palermo, Parma, Roma, Sampdoria and Udinese.

Recent history:

The current champions are AC Milan, who won the 2010-11 Italian Serie A title, 6 points ahead of Inter Milan in 2nd place.

The most successful club in the competition are Juventus, with 27 titles since the competition became the Italian Serie A in 1898.
