The teams finishing in the top three places of French Ligue 2 are automatically promoted to French Ligue 1 at the end of the season, with the teams finishing in the bottom three places being relegated to the French Championnat National, the third division of football in France.

The 20 teams currently competing in the 2010–11 French Ligue 2 are:

Ajaccio, Angers, Boulogne, Chateauroux, Clermont, Dijon, Evian, Grenoble, Istres, Laval, Le Havre, Le Mans, Metz, Nantes, Nimes, Reims, Sedan, Tours, Troyes and Vannes.

Recent history:

The current champions are Caen, who won the 2009-10 French Ligue 2 title by 2 points, ahead of Brest in 2nd place.
