The current champions are Reading, who won the 2011-12 English Championship title by just a point, finishing ahead of Southampton in 2nd place.

A total of 19 different clubs have been promoted from this division since it became the English Championship in 2004.

Barnsley, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers, Brighton & Hove Albion, Bristol City, Burnley, Cardiff City, Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace, Derby County, Huddersfield Town, Hull City, Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Leicester City, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Nottingham Forest, Peterborough United, Sheffield Wednesday, Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Competition format:

The winners and runners-up of the English Championship are automatically promoted to the English Premier League, with the teams finishing from 3rd to 6th competiting in the play-offs to decide the third team to be promoted. The teams finishing in the bottom three places will be relegated to English League One.
