Competition format:

The winners and runners-up of the English Championship are automatically promoted to the English Premier League, with the teams finishing from 3rd to 6th competiting in the play-offs to decide the third team to be promoted. The teams finishing in the bottom three places will be relegated to English League One.

The 24 clubs currently competing in the 2010–11 English Championship are:

Barnsley, Bristol City, Burnley, Cardiff City, Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Derby County, Doncaster Rovers, Hull City, Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Leicester City, Middlesbrough, Millwall, Nottingham Forest, Norwich City, Portsmouth, Preston North End, Queens Park Rangers, Reading, Scunthorpe United, Sheffield United, Swansea City and Watford.

Recent history:

The current champions are Newcastle United, who won the 2009-10 English Championship title, 11 points ahead of West Bromwich Albion in 2nd place.

A total of 15 clubs have been promoted from this division since it became the English Championship in 2004.
