Competition format:
In the 2nd stage of the competition, the 32 remaining teams are divided into eight groups of four, with each team in the group playing each other home and away. The winners and runners-up from each group then qualify for the knockout stages, which are played over 2 legs, leading to the final which is also played over 2 legs.

The current holders are Internacional (Brazil), who won the 2010 Copa Libertadores final 5-3 on aggregate against Guadalajara Chivas (Mexico).
The most successful club in the competition is Independiente (Argentina), who have won the title 7 times. Argentina is also the most successful nation in the competition with 22 titles.
