In the group stage, the teams are divided into four groups of four, with each team in the group playing each other home and away. The winners and runners-up from each group then qualify for the knockout round, which is played over 2 legs.

The final of the tournament is also played over 2 legs, home and away, with the away goals rule applying before the teams play extra-time and penalties.
