There are 8 groups, divided into 4 teams, where the top team and runners-up of each group will qualify for the knockout stage. In the knockout stage, the winners of each group play 1 leg against the runners-up from another group.
The quarter-final and semi-final stage becomes a free draw, which is played over 2 legs, but teams from the same nation cannot be matched up against each other. The final of the tournament is contested as a one-off match at a neutral venue.

Bahrain, Australia, China PR, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Korea Republic, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen.
The current holders are Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma (Korea Republic), who won the 2010 AFC Champions League final 3-1 against Zob Ahan (Iran).
The most successful club in the competition are Pohang Steelers, who won the cup in 1996-97, 1997-98 and 2009. Korea Republic are also the most successful nation in the competition, with 9 titles (Pohang Steelers 3, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma 2, Suwon Samsung Bluewings 2, Jeonbuk Motors 1, Busan I.Park 1).
